Original work on Tropical Eosinophilia done at the JJ Government Hospital, Bombay. This work has been embodied in a number of scientific papers and in a monograph on Pulmonary Eosinophilia. This work has been internationally recognized and acclaimed and is quoted as a standard reference in all textbooks of medicine, in textbooks on chest diseases and in other related work on this subject.
Pioneered Critical Care, and in particular Intensive Respiratory Care from the late sixties onwards in India, and have now set up a unit at the Breach Candy Hospital which has a standard of excellence equal to some of the best centres in the West. Embodied his early experience in 1979 in a monograph titled “Diagnosis and Management of Acute Respiratory Failure” (Oxford University Press). At that time this was one of the few existing books published on this subject in world literature. In 1995 published a magnum opus on Principles of Critical Care (Oxford University Press) – the first book of its kind in India and among the very few books on this subject in South-East Asia.
Original research on Tetanus - with special reference to the hemodynamics of severe tetanus and its management. This is embodied in research papers and in a monograph on Tetanus which is now the standard reference on the subject.
During the eighties Dr. Farokh Erach Udwadia totally reorganized and re-equipped the tetanus ward under his care at the JJ Hospital, Bombay, without even slightly encroaching on government funds. Dr. Farokh Erach Udwadia succeeded in reducing the mortality of fulminant tetanus from well-nigh 100% to 20%, and the overall mortality from 30% to under 10%. Overall critical care at the JJ Hospital originated with his work on Tetanus.
The work, publications and books in speciality have earned a number of national and international honors including visiting professorships to various renowned universities and institutions both in this country and abroad. This recognition is also exemplified by him being awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1987, Regent of India for the American College of Chest Physicians, and by being appointed to the Scientific Committee of the ICMR and to the International Panel of Advisors to the Journal of Respiratory Medicine. Dr. Farokh Erach Udwadia was awarded the Dhanvantri Award in 1996 and the award of a Master Fellow was conferred upon him by the International and American College of Chest Physicians in 1997. This award has been given to only eight individuals in the world in over 60 years since the founding of the College. Dr. Farokh Erach Udwadia is the second Asian and the first Indian to receive this honored award.
Dr. Farokh Erach Udwadia was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1998 and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians in 2000.
Dr. Farokh Erach Udwadia have been actively involved in teaching for the last 40 years. Numerous students of his hold important positions in General Medicine, Respiratory Medicine and in Critical Care not only in various centers in the country but also in several centers in the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
Dr. Farokh Erach Udwadia have been selected by the American College of Physicians to be the sole representative for India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka at the forthcoming International Congress in March 2001. The conference is to discuss reciprocal relationships in education, research and patient care.
